St. Wenceslaus Catholic School in Omaha, Nebraska, opened the new school year with a lot more space. MCL Construction completed a two-story addition to the existing school and church buildings that added six additional classrooms.
"St. Wenceslaus is grateful for the beautiful new facility," said Amber Glasshoff, the Operations Director at St. Wenceslaus. "We now have updated classrooms with more space and a higher level of security to provide a safer and better learning environment and an opportunity for our 870 students to grow."
The project took 14 months to complete and had to be carefully sequenced because of the site constraints and completing masonry and concrete work in the winter.
Underground ductwork was installed to feed the existing mechanical equipment. The slate shingles and exterior masonry match perfectly with the existing building.
"MCL has been very good to work with throughout this project. They were able to identify issues and communicate well with the Parish and architects to efficiently resolve any issues," added Glasshoff.
The entire project added 13,315 square feet to the St. Wenceslaus campus. There are spacious restrooms on each floor, and a FEMA-rated storm shelter for additional safety.

MCL Construction in Omaha, Nebraska is committed to employee engagement and developing leaders for tomorrow's building environment. Project Manager Fernando Gutierrez and Project Engineer Sam Howe recently completed the AGC-Nebraska Building Chapter Leadership Academy, a program designed to foster emerging leaders to achieve extraordinary results.
"The instructors of this course were very passionate about leadership and the importance of strong leaders in business and life. Having instructors like that made the class very enjoyable and a great learning experience. I also liked how engaged the classes were. It was extremely beneficial to hear the other participants experiences and viewpoints on leadership. Throughout this class I was able to get to know myself as a leader, what I need to work on, and the kind of leader I want to be. After completing this class, I feel I have a strong foundation and the tools to grow and be a great leader," said Howe.
Each person participating in the AGC Leadership Academy was tasked with developing a "Model The Way" project. Howe is leading MCL Construction's Habitat for Humanity Builders Blitz efforts. Guiterrez is working on establishing informational sessions for young women at the high school level to engage them in career opportunities in construction. These planned meetings mirror Guiterrez's definition of leadership.
"Leadership to me is having the human connection and emotional intelligence to reach people on a personal level and inform them of the common goal. Being clear and concise enough to let the people around you know not only what the end goal is but why the goal needs to be accomplished and why the efforts of everyone are necessary to get there," said Guiterrez.
