MCL Construction in Omaha, Nebraska, recently completed construction on the new Central Sterile Processing Facility for Nebraska Medicine. It serves as a central location for the sterilization of all surgical instruments used by Nebraska Medicine.
"This project sets the stage for our long-term growth and flexibility by centralizing complex sterilization and case pick activities into one facility to support our whole system," said Brian Spencer, Manager of Facilities Planning at Nebraska Medicine and UNMC. "In the future, as we grow surgical sites of care, we no longer need to worry about full sterile processing departments." The 39,500 square foot facility was developed by LendLease, a worldwide leader in healthcare development and investment opportunities. The centralized Sterile Processing Facility is innovative in concept and keeps Nebraska Medicine and UNMC on the cutting edge of the healthcare industry. "This facility fundamentally reduces our risk by streamlining and standardizing all sterilization and case pick activities across our system with the primary goals being to reduce errors and increase efficiency," added Spencer. "We are a very early adopter of this style of development and, to the best of our knowledge, are the first in the Midwest and Big 10 schools to bring online an integrated service center." MCL Construction, the leading healthcare builder in Omaha area, partnered with Nebraska Medicine and LendLease early in the design process providing expert budgetary and value management services. The design and construction of the facility were fast-tracked to meet the mandatory completion date. "Excellent, above expectations," said Clark Bridgman the General Manager of Design and Construction for LendLease. "On a scale of 1 to 10, it was a 10." Brian Spencer added to what Bridgman said about working with MCL Construction. "As always, the MCL team came to the table as our trusted partner and ensured we brought online the right facility at the right cost at the right time."

The Lauritzen Outpatient Center is innovative in its design and MCL Construction took an innovative approach to the way it was constructed. Our team utilized 3D high definition laser scanning in preconstruction to identify potential safety hazards on the project site; you can read our case study here. MCL Construction is the leading local healthcare constructor in Omaha. Now in its 30th year, MCL Construction has built or remodeled over 3 million square feet of healthcare space. ![]() Exactly two years to the day since breaking ground, Nebraska Medicine opened the doors of the Lauritzen Outpatient Center, designed to provide the best possible experience for patients. Both the design of the facility and its location on the edge of the Nebraska Medicine campus will provide one-stop, patient-centered care in a variety of areas. Perhaps the most attractive feature: dedicated surface and garage parking for patients and families offering new convenience not typically provided elsewhere on campus. “The construction of this building really was driven from day one by a desire to make things easier for our patients,” said Dan DeBehnke, MD, MBA, CEO of Nebraska Medicine. “While the care our patients previously received in the Durham Outpatient Center here on campus was top notch, there were a lot of barriers in terms of access to those services. We believe the Lauritzen Outpatient Center, which includes the Fritch Surgery Center for outpatient surgical services, offers a patient experience that can’t be found elsewhere in Omaha.” Doctors in orthopaedics are already noticing how the design of the Lauritzen Outpatient Center is improving the experience not only for patients, but for physicians and other staff members as well. “Having our clinic, X-ray and physical therapy in close proximity has made for much more efficient flow of our patients through the facility,” said Matt Mormino, MD, an orthopaedic surgeon at Nebraska Medicine. “The experience for patients has been improved dramatically.” The second floor of the facility is occupied by the Fritch Surgery Center, a suite of 10 state-of-the-art operating rooms designed for outpatient procedures. Four of the operating rooms will be dedicated to ophthalmic surgery affiliated with the Truhlsen Eye Institute next door. The Fritch Surgery Center was made possible through a gift by Charles D. Fritch, MD and his wife, Judy. Dr. Fritch is a graduate of the UNMC College of Medicine. The building’s top floor, supported by a gift from Bill and Ruth Scott, is home to the headquarters of the UNMC Department of Orthopaedic Surgery and Rehabilitation, its research laboratories and educational space. It also includes a new center for telemedicine. “We are incredibly thankful for the generosity of the Lauritzen, Fritch, Scott and Truhlsen families, along with Clarkson Regional Health Services,” said Jeffrey P. Gold, MD, Chancellor of UNMC. “Their gifts and commitment to UNMC and Nebraska Medicine continue to have an overwhelmingly positive effect on the Omaha community and will allow us to continue to improve upon the extraordinary care already being provided here.” Here is a list of services and their locations within the facility:
Services within the Lauritzen Outpatient Center opened gradually throughout the month of November, culminating with the opening of the Fritch Surgery Center on Nov. 30. A skywalk connecting the Lauritzen Outpatient Center with the Truhlsen Eye Institute to the east is now under construction. MCL Construction broke ground on the 168,000 square-foot-facility on Nov. 14, 2014. It opened exactly two years later on Nov. 14, 2016. The cost of the project was $70.8 million. |
