Westwood Church will be adding 18,000 square feet to its existing facility and renovating an additional 13,000 square feet of its current space.
"This represents a major change in how we see ourselves, and how we see ourselves as a community church," said Westwood Church Senior Pastor Scott Christensen.
The groundbreaking coincided with the congregation's annual meeting and church dinner that was attended by several hundred church members. Each was given an opportunity to write a blessing on drywall that will be installed during the project.
"So, literally, now we will be blessing people who will be here in the future," said Pastor Christensen. "I think people are going to be able to say there is a piece of me inside here. Not just money, not serving on a committee, but a piece of me and my family in there that I think means something."
The projects progress will be visible to drivers passing by on 132nd Street and is scheduled to be completed in early September 2017.
