Creighton Preparatory High School in Omaha, Nebraska, recently won the Class-A State Baseball Championship. Because of weather, the Jr. Jays clinched the title on their home turf. Rain forced the championship game to be played at Creighton Prep because its field is 100% artificial and can take on more water than a standard baseball field.
MCL Construction installed the new turf during the offseason. Manufactured by Astroturf, the project included new batting cages, bullpens, and a 10-foot high outfield fence. However, the field is the showpiece, featuring a large “CP” in centerfield and a Jr. Jays logo behind home plate. The outfield has striping to give the appearance of real grass and the base paths, pitcher’s mound, and home plate features a brown Astroturf to simulate dirt.
"The feedback has been phenomenal," said Dr. Dan Schinzel, Director of Athletics at Creighton Prep. "The project allows Prep to serve our baseball athletes, coaches, and fans better. It also gives us additional space for PE classes, intramurals, and football practices."
The field features a state-of-the-art drainage system that allows the field to take on 16 inches of rain per hour.
"Creighton Prep is now one of two schools in the state of Nebraska to have a fully turfed baseball complex," said Dr. Schinzel. "With the top loading stands and building backdrop, this is by far the best baseball complex in the state. Many people have told me how stunning the field looks from 72nd Street."
The baseball field is one of the several recent projects MCL Construction completed at the all-boys Jesuit High School. The chapel renovation provides a simple yet stunning place to worship for students, staff, and visitors. The sanctuary features marble walls, cloud ceiling panels, new pews, and the white interior accentuates the stained glass windows that were already in place.
Additionally, MCL Construction led the installation of new monument signs at the school. The large sign at the corner of 72nd Street and Western Avenue is constructed of masonry and precast concrete. It features a large steel cross and the Creighton Prep seal.
