Braden’s father owns a small residential construction company; this allowed him to be exposed to the profession at a young age. Now that he is older, Braden is expanding his knowledge in all aspects of the construction industry.
This summer, Braden decided to explore the commercial side of construction as a project engineer intern with MCL’s internship program. The program allows him to grow his knowledge not only in the office but in the field as well.
“I like having the opportunity to see both the business and field sides of things. There is a good mix; I’ll do a lot in the office, but I'll also have to go out and talk to the subs and do things in the field,” explained Braden.
Construction is no different than a lot of other professional careers; the earlier you get your foot in the door, the better. For Braden, this is his first internship, but he spent most of his previous summers working at small companies, just getting experience.
“The best thing I ever did was get into construction when I was in high school. I would work summer jobs which allowed me the opportunity to choose from a lot of different internships and I think exposing yourself to experience is really important,” commented Braden.
Although Braden is only an intern, he still must perform tasks that cause challenges for him being only a college student.
“It’s always been kind of weird to me being a 20-year-old kid calling up someone twice my age getting on them to make sure they do what they promised to do,” revealed Braden.
Before he graduates, Braden is interested in getting another internship, but this time as a superintendent so he can get more experience in the field to get a different perspective on things. Because Braden is only a junior, he has a few more years before he can fully begin his career. Once he finishes his classes, Braden will be eager to get to work and hopes to stay with MCL Construction.
“I am excited to see where construction can take me and I really like MCL so, hopefully, I could have a chance to come back here after college. I like how MCL is a local company and family-based because the family has always been a big thing to me, so I'd like to stay close,” stated Braden.
