The new "Healing Grounds" Cafe opens at CHI Health Creighton University Medical Center-Bergan Mercy. The coffee and snack shop was built by MCL Construction, an Omaha, Nebraska, based construction manager and general contractor.
"The construction of the space was in a challenging environment right next to the emergency department," said Jason Bauer, MCL Construction Project Manager. "Working in a hospital takes specific expertise. Our team coordinated construction activities with the surrounding departments and we communicated on a daily basis which events would be taking place."
Terri Hill from CHI Health CUMC-Bergan Mercy added, "It was a great construction experience. Everyone was excellent to work with, the team was always friendly and helpful with any questions or concerns and also resolved everything quickly."
MCL Construction completed the project in eight weeks. The new coffee shop is a significant upgrade from the kiosk that was used in the past. Healing Grounds Cafe offers added seating, more capacity for coffee, smoothies, and specialty drinks as well as additional space to present and prepare baked goods.
"The response has been overwhelmingly positive," said Hill. "We have seen a 100% growth over our other coffee station, people enjoy the variety of products, and the comfortable look and feel. It's a great place to meet and relax for a few minutes.
