“We want people leaving our building thinking, wow! MCL is a great company and they do quality work, and without passion, you can’t really leave a project with those feelings.”
As an estimator, JoEllen creates deliverables to win projects, which in turn creates work for our employees in the field.
“The key to being a good estimator is not to be the lowest-priced, but to be the most thorough and most knowledgeable about each company’s needs,” explained JoEllen.
When asked if her internship at MCL Construction helped with her career, she was quick to answer.
“Yes! It was a huge learning curve for me, I was learning every day, and there are going to be new things to learn going forward, but it set me up for success.”
JoEllen believes that the culture here at MCL Construction is like no other. One of her favorite things about MCL when she first started working was being able to get to know the team having that feeling of a family, not just a workplace.
Throughout high school, JoEllen took many classes which helped spark an interest in engineering, but it wasn’t until college when she specifically became interested in construction engineering. It was a mentor at UNL that nudged JoEllen into construction. She now sees this opportunity as a chance to have a positive impact on how buildings operate.
She also learned construction has its own language and is not an easy one to understand. There are key words and acronyms to learn to do the job and be competent. JoEllen worked hard to know how to “talk the construction talk” by joining a professional network called the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC). This group unites women who work in construction and provides the tools and resources necessary to help us succeed in this highly competitive field.
Looking into the future, JoEllen is excited to see not only how Omaha will expand, but how MCL Construction will grow with it. She advises to anyone interested in joining MCL Construction to be able to meet the core values of: Passionate, Dedicated, and Thorough, and to not just want to be a “cog in the system,” but instead want to stand out and create something great.
MCL Construction uses many voices from within and outside the company to give informed advice, opinions, and techniques about construction methods, innovation, and technology.
