The Mary Our Queen Early Childhood Education Center opened its doors to students in early September. As a school and faith community, students, faculty, and staff celebrated the addition of a new preschool and youth center with a ribbon cutting Monday morning.
The roughly 10,000 square foot new building near 120th and Valley Streets includes four classrooms, a kitchenette, large restrooms, staff office, and community spaces where students can play and learn. From the start, the entire project was designed and built with students in mind. In addition to the classrooms, special features include a climbing wall for students to play on, a playhouse built into student cubbies, and a multi-functional separate youth space in the center of the building that opens up to the community spaces with unique built-in windows that vary in shape. Outside of school hours, the building functions as a meeting and gathering space that will be used as a youth center for all students.
“Seeing the design on blueprints is one thing,” said Mary Our Queen Director of Stewardship and Development Katie Murphy. “Now that we see it come to life and see the students running, smiling, and playing in it, is a great feeling.”
MCL officially broke ground on the project in October. A few months into the project, we were challenged with restrictions due to the uncertainty of COVID-19. Despite unprecedented hurdles, students were able to be in their classrooms at the start of the year - a goal of everyone working on the team.
“COVID-19 affected some material deliveries but ordering materials early in the process allowed us to mitigate the effects of COVID on the overall schedule,” said Project Manager Mike Heser.
The building will be a great addition to assist with school and parish growth and outreach efforts.
