Evolving with training and education -- it’s one of the six MCL Construction Principles of Performance.
The new MCL Construction Headquarters is a showcase of the work MCL is capable of and an investment in the future. The building was designed to be a place to innovate, collaborate, and, above all, learn how to best serve our employees and clients through education.
“I think there is a huge misconception that all you do in construction is build buildings,” said Director of Training and Development, Tanna White. “While we do that, we do significantly more than that. Not only are we builders, but we have to manage the process from start to finish and help people navigate through what can be a scary process.”
Having the right team can make that process less stressful and lead to the execution of a world-class project. From a project partner side, everyone should get the same experience on every project. That experience is founded in customer service and learned through training. MCL is committed to a detailed training plan to ensure both employee and client satisfaction. It is a plan that started about seven years ago in a small MCL office on Christmas Eve. MCL Construction Managing Principal, Tony Fucinaro, held the meeting to come up with a program that showed our commitment to our employees and our clients through education. “Our industry will always be evolving, but more so, it is about investing in our people. You must invest time and resources. Investing in partnerships and projects and evolving with training and education allows us to make good on our promises to execute a project,” said Fucinaro. Out of that meeting came our PILOT (Promoting Innovation, Leadership, Operations, and Technology) program. The mission of PILOT is to provide easy access for learning and development for our employees to be successful in their roles, maximize their capabilities, and help them achieve their full potential. “PILOT is a major part of our plans and growth strategies. We want to provide people with the careers they want and are committed to giving owners and project partners the best experience possible. This plan will ensure solid career paths for our team and equal experience for clients,” said Fucinaro. The plan was there, the missing piece was a space conducive to learning. Implementing that space was a priority in the construction of our new headquarters. MCL leadership created the MCL Training Room built with a purpose to educate beyond your standard means. The space seats roughly 200 people and can be divided into two classrooms with a hidden partition wall. In addition to the space, the room offers state-of-the-art technology and an audio-visual level of training that we did not have access to at our old building. Now, employees can see the tools they will be using in real-time projected onto massive screens. Learning does not just happen in the classroom. This space gives us the ability to get information out to the team in a lot of different ways. We can be with a team virtually on any job site through streaming or recorded lessons sent to individual employees. We also can broadcast to different rooms within our headquarters. Reaching our employees and making their work experience more productive and easier to understand has a direct impact on the project they produce. As an industry, it is our responsibility to lead our team so they can take what we give them and become leaders of their own on each project they are assigned. “As the General Contractor or Construction Manager, we are in charge of that project from start to finish and we need to be able to lead our teams and the subcontractors as well -- that is where the leadership component comes into play,” said White. MCL plans to continue to grow the group program and is already starting individualized courses based on our employees’ education and training needs.
