This week, MCL celebrates National Construction Safety Week. The week is dedicated to recognizing and reinforcing our dedication to safety.
“Our commitment to safety is a promise to ourselves, to our workers, our coworkers, and family members that rely on us,” said President and Founder Bob Carlisle. “Safety Week allows us to celebrate and recognize that promise.”
The annual Safety Week is September 14-20, 2020. This year, we have been challenged with restrictions due to COVID-19. Keeping safety at the forefront of our business, MCL transitioned the week’s programs into virtual reminders, challenges, and video presentations.
In June, we opened our new headquarters with state-of-the-art technology that allows our employees to stay connected in a time where distance is the new normal. This new technology will be used to share virtual messages throughout the company all week.
“Technology allows us to safely show our employees dangerous hazards on the job,” said Senior Vice President Tony Fucinaro. “This year, we are taking that a step further and using our advanced resources to continue virtual safety training and communicate important, interactive messages company-wide.”
Carlisle kicked off the week with a video message to every MCL employee. He is a businessman who prioritizes the health and wellness of his employees.
“When we walk on a job, what is on the line? Is it the work, our reputation, a paycheck? What is on the line is the life and livelihood of every worker. That is why it is our job to ensure every worker is safe,” said Carlisle.
During the week, MCL is partnering with Athletico to help with lifting form. They will be offering a live virtual event offering tips on proper form when lifting large, heavy materials on site.
Kristal Mordhorst, MCL’s new Health and Wellness Director, joined our team in July. She is a certified personal trainer through the American Council of Exercise with a Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology from Iowa State University. She will be introducing a modified stretching program our employees will participate in each morning to prepare for the day.
She is also introducing an early intervention and a post-injury care program. These programs are designed to prevent new injuries and promote proper healing with current injuries that could potentially lead to a severe injury.
Beyond physical safety, we want to focus on mental health. We will discuss ways the company can prioritize the mental health of each of our employees and share resources for where help can be found for those who need it.
Virtual reality (VR) has been used in the past to safely immerse our employees into potentially hazardous scenarios and show them what can happen when you do not practice safety protocol. This training will be used throughout the year in small groups. Due to COVID-19, we will not be conducting a large VR training this week.
MCL received the Nebraska’s Safest Companies Award presented by the National Safety Council in 2019. We had zero recorded injuries in 2018; we are on track to do the same this year.
We recognize safety this week, but it is a year-round initiative for MCL. Our success starts with safety.
